Club goes a bit quiet

Less to report in May and June for a couple of reasons. At the May meeting our talk was by Mark Christopher on the subject of cycling and why we should all do it. Mark seems something of a born-again disciple of the sport, both putting in the pedal-hours himself and taking an interest in professionals. Well, one professional in particular—Puck Moonen, a Dutch pro cyclist who also happens to be easy on the eye and who has mastered social media to present a glamorous lifestyle to her adoring audience. I wasn’t able to make it to the meeting, and sadly neither was my regular stand-in Stuart Mitchell, so unfortunately it was a purely analogue experience, with no livestream and no video of the talk. But I’m told it was most enjoyable and Mark’s genuine enthusiasm for bicycles and bicycling came across.

Our June gathering was meant to feature a talk from Luca Jellinek about architecture, but it turned out to fall in the middle of a heatwave and Luca decided it would be best to postpone the presentation, as he felt that the temperatures would make it difficult for some people to brave public transport to get into town. Nevertheless a dozen or so souls gathered in the upstairs room of the Bishop’s Finger, supped ale and exhibited a variety of sartorial responses to the unseasonable warmth (see photo below).
